Summer League Final Report
Before the last round of matches completing the NETTS Summer League three teams were in a good position to take the top spot. Bottom team NETTS POMPEY needed a whitewash 5-0 win over IPSWICH to avoid the wooden spoon. Two wins for James Mullane including a four set win over former county player Andy Holmes and one for Hannah Pitt saw POMPEY take a 3-0 lead. A win in the last singles for Holmes and the same result in the doubles secured fifth place for IPSWICH. Third place NETTS BOTTOM also needed a 5-0 win to challenge for the league title. This never seemed possible with the league’s only 100% player in their opponents TOLLESHUNT team. Two expected wins for Alex Abbott and a good win for Jan Fuller plus the doubles saw TOLLESHUNT leap frog the NETTS team into third place. The top two teams drawn together in the last round of competition were NETTS ARGYLE and LIBERAL. The first singles saw NETTS Gary Cattermole score a 3-0 singles win over Peter Hayden. The second singles had Paul Davison against Scott Dowsett and this match could not have been closer with NETTS Davison taking a close win 16-14, 8-11, 12-10, 9-11, 14-12. This win was even more surprising with Dowsett having game points in all of the three games he eventually lost. After this victory a rampant Davison ensured the Summer League title with a 3-0 win over Hayden. A win for Dowsett in a close 3-2 encounter with Cattermole and a four set win in the doubles saw some respectability return to the score. A 3-2 victory for the NETTS team was enough however to ensure a two point gap at the top of the Summer League. Top three playing averages were Abbott 100%, Davison 90% and Dowsett 70%. Trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up by NETTS Club Chairman, Peter Hardy
